Kensington Park Plaza
Built in 1999 by Jansen, this 26,000 sf mixed-use project showcases his new-urbanism principles by emphasizing the pedestrian experience and neighborhood scale. 7,000 sf of sidewalk-fronted retail around a corner plaza create a popular space for community interaction, while parking is provided in the rear, accessible by driveway and alley. Upstairs are 11 unique live-work lofts with generous windows providing natural light and views. Use of local architectural details such as stacked flagstone columns, Spanish tile roofs and arches create a contextual balance with the existing Kensington neighborhood. This project was awarded an Orchid for Architecture and was hailed by the City of San Diego planning commission for ideally reflecting their “City of Villages” vision.
